The Grecian Ladies rob Robins
Swindon Town Ladies returned to League action after a four week break but not to winning ways when they were beaten by two goals to one at Fairford by Exeter City in the South West Combination League.
Exeter opened the stronger but the Town defence withstood the early pressure. As the half wore on the Town began to get their game together and it was the visitors defence that had most of the action.
A Beth Thompson corner caused a scramble in the Exeter goalmouth and the ball broke to Georgia Walters whose low shot was saved by keeper Maxine Coupe. Sara Moreira, who was making her League debut in the Towns goal, did well to tip Lola Sanchez’s 25 yard drive round the post for a corner. Beth Thompson played Amy Baker clear but the Exeter keeper made a brave save at the feet of the Town’s player.
The Town were having the better of the play and Michelle Rich had Maxine Coupe in the City goal saving low at the post. Georgia Walters looked to be clear but a well timed challenge by Josie Copp prevented the Town attracker from shooting but the City keeper was soon in action again saving a Georgia Walter’s free kick.
Beth Thompson picked up an Exeter clearance and slipped the ball on to Georgia Walters who with the keeper off her line lobbed the ball goal wards but it dropped just over the bar.
In the 57th minute the visitors took the lead. The Town gave the ball away in midfield and Helen Kukor ran clear to beat the advancing keeper. The sides were level within five minutes when Georgia Walters laid the ball off to Amy Baker who tucked it neatly just inside the far post. Exeter regained the lead on 65 mins. when Catherine Wright drove a free kick into the net. Lola Sanchez the almost increased their lead but her shot hit the Town’s upright.
The Town threw everything forward and City fullback Corine Potts did well to prevent Sally Butterfield breaking clear and then the Town wide player went close after good work by Chyna Collings.
Overall a good footballing game although a disappointing result for the Town.
