Dogs tamed by Cats
Swindon Wildcats earned themselves back to back league victories, after notching a 7-4 home win against the Sheffield Steeldogs.
In a game that opened well for both sides, the first ten minutes could only hold a deadlock as the ‘Cats and Steeldogs would match each other in every department. However some individual talents from the home side’s’ Tomasz Malasinski soon saw the game’s first goal. The Wildcat import would show some quick moves to fit between two defenseman and despite coming down, would slide the puck past netminder Dalibor Sedlar.
Swindon then made it two with just minutes remaining in the period, as Malasinski would find his second after being supplied in front of net with a pin point pass to score.
An action second period soon saw the next goal and this time at the hands of the visitors. A powerplay chance for the Steeldogs would leave Greg Wood to burst down the left wing, before tucking in a tight shot at the near post past Stevie Lyle.
However the ‘Cats soon responded with a goal of their own, with Adam Harding finishing well on his own blocked shot, to beat Sedlar once more across goal.
Moments on and the hosts then added another as Floyd Taylor’s follow up would see his first of 2015 and a tap in effort to leave the scores at 4-1.
In the dying seconds of the period young forward Toms Rutkis would then add a fifth, poking the puck across the line after several Swindon attempts to round off 2 periods of play.
Picking up where they left off in the second, the ‘Cats quickly went about making it 6 in 55th minute. A solid pass across ice would leave club captain Jan Kostal with the chance to one time the puck low and pass Sedlar for a final time.
Having seen six go by, Sheffield would then ice back up netminder Brad Day from here and with it, look to find a response.
Sheffield would then find that response soon after as a glove side shot via Janis Ozolins would see the puck find the net a beat new Swindon netminder Michael Crisp who would take the ice just seconds before.
In a matter of minutes, the travellers then made it three with Steve Duncombe following up a rebound after an initial netminder save for a 6-3 scoreline.
Despite several opportunities on the ‘Dogs net, Sheffield themselves would then net once more for a fourth goal and one to see them start threatening the home sides’ lead. It would be Tim Smith who would find a way through the pads of Crisp and with it, force a netminder change back with Lyle between the pipes.
The away side would then pull Day for the extra man in the final minute, however Kostal’s play up ice would see the Czech move past a defenseman before scoring a final seventh in the empty net.
A final 7-4 score means the ‘Cats continue to battle high in the EPIHL table and earn another 2 points to keep them fourth In the league.
